What is business loan amortisation?

Amortisation is the gradual repayment of a debt. On a conventional fixed-rate repayment loan, each payment covers interest due for the month and uses the remainder to reduce the capital balance. At the start, more of the payment tends to go towards interest because the outstanding balance is larger.

This calculator uses monthly interest on a reducing balance and a level contractual payment. The schedule shows opening balance, payment, interest, capital repaid and closing balance for each month. It is also useful if you searched for an amortization calculator using the US spelling; the calculations here are in pounds sterling.

Model a regular monthly overpayment

Enter an extra monthly amount to pay on top of the normal instalment. The tool applies it to reduce principal after that month's interest, maintains the original scheduled payment and shortens the term. It stops when the loan is paid off and caps the last payment at the remaining debt plus interest.

The savings are compared with the same loan without overpayments. This assumes the lender allows the extra payments, applies them promptly to capital and does not impose a charge. Some agreements instead recalculate future instalments or restrict overpayments, so the forecast needs to match your contract.

Keep working-capital needs in view

Reducing debt can save interest, but spare cash may also be needed for tax, stock, maintenance or customer payment delays. An overpayment plan should preserve an adequate operating reserve and account for other borrowing commitments.

Before sending extra funds, ask for the lender's overpayment policy and whether it reduces the term or the monthly payment. A formal settlement figure can include accrued interest and contractual charges that a simple calculator cannot infer. The schedule here is an illustration rather than a settlement statement.

  • Compare the no-overpayment and overpayment interest totals.
  • Check the final payment and shortened payoff month.
  • Confirm any limits or early-repayment charges.
  • Keep enough cash for foreseeable operating commitments.

Common questions

Before you compare finance

Does the calculator shorten the term or reduce instalments?

It keeps the original regular repayment and adds the entered overpayment, shortening the payoff period. It does not recast the loan to lower later contractual instalments.

Can I download the amortisation schedule?

Yes. The CSV includes the inputs, monthly opening and closing balances, payment, interest and capital repaid. Fees are shown separately as an upfront amount.

Why could the lender's balance differ?

Daily interest, payment dates, fees, missed payments and contractual rounding can change the balance. Compare the estimate with the lender's statements and obtain a formal quote for settlement.
