How to use this business loan calculator

Enter the amount you want to borrow, the nominal annual interest rate and the number of months you plan to repay it over. Use the interest rate from your quotation where possible. The starting figures are illustrative assumptions, not available lender offers.

Add arrangement or broker fees that you would pay upfront. The result separates the regular repayment from the overall cash cost. Download the schedule to see how each monthly payment is split between interest and capital. The calculator works for a conventional small business loan with equal monthly repayments; it does not model a merchant cash advance or a revolving overdraft.

  • Use pounds sterling and a whole number of months: three years is 36 months.
  • Compare shorter and longer terms using the same borrowing amount and rate.
  • Keep fees, security requirements and early-repayment conditions alongside the calculation.

Monthly repayments versus total borrowing cost

A longer term usually lowers the monthly payment on the same capital-and-interest loan, while increasing interest paid overall. A shorter term can reduce interest but leave less room for normal operating costs. Neither result tells you whether a lender will approve your business.

For example, £50,000 borrowed over 60 months at an assumed nominal annual rate of 10%, with no fees, costs approximately £1,062.35 a month and £13,741.13 in interest. Changing the term or rate changes both figures. Actual lender schedules can differ because of daily interest, payment dates and rounding.

Build a business repayment budget

Compare the payment with cash left after wages, suppliers, tax and existing debt commitments. Turnover alone does not establish affordability. Allow for customers paying late, seasonal sales and a period of weaker trading.

For a variable-rate loan, test a higher rate as well as the opening quotation. If a fee is financed, add it to the borrowing amount rather than entering it as an upfront fee. That changes both the payment and interest; the calculator's principal will then represent the total financed balance, not the cash received.

  • Write down cash available after operating costs and tax.
  • Include existing loan, lease and overdraft commitments.
  • Check personal guarantees and any assets offered as security.
  • Ask the lender for a formal payment schedule before signing.

Choose a calculator that matches the agreement

The specialist tools below cover commercial property deposits, interest-only capital repayments, short-term bridging structures, Start Up Loans and amortisation with overpayments. Different repayment structures should be compared using the final balance and total cost as well as the monthly payment.

This website is independent of lenders. If you have a quotation from a bank or specialist finance provider, enter its figures and check the assumptions against the agreement. A quoted flat rate or factor rate should not be treated as the reducing-balance nominal rate used here.

Common questions

Before you compare finance

Is this a business loan APR calculator?

No. The input is a nominal annual interest rate, divided by 12 for monthly interest. APR includes specified borrowing costs and uses an annualised calculation, so it should not automatically be entered as the nominal rate. Ask the lender which rate is used in its payment schedule. Fees entered here are paid upfront and shown separately.

Can I use it for an unsecured small business loan?

Yes, if the agreement has equal monthly capital-and-interest repayments. Whether a loan is secured affects eligibility, risk and pricing, but not this standard repayment formula. The result is not an eligibility assessment.

Does using the calculator affect my credit score?

No. It calculates estimates in your browser without an application or credit search. You do not need to enter personal or business contact details.

Sources and calculation assumptions

Reviewed 11 October 2026. Independent educational tool; calculations are estimates, not a finance offer or affordability assessment. Annual-rate tools use a nominal rate divided by 12. The bridging tool uses the entered monthly rate. All fees are paid upfront. No payment holidays, taxes, insurance or default charges are included.
